18-year-old charged with murder in Austin fentanyl overdose case

The Austin Police Department has arrested and charged an 18-year-old man in connection to a fentanyl overdose death that occurred in April. The 17-year-old’s death follows another fentanyl-related murder charge in Central Texas.  Xavier Alexzander Buentello has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with selling fentanyl to 17-year-old Sienna Rae Contreras, which ultimately killed her, according to an APD news release. Contreras was found dead in her bed by her father on the morning of April 13.  Austin police responded to a call from Contreras’ father around 11 a.m. on April 13 in the 1200 block of Knollpark Circle, according to the release. Upon arrival, officers were informed that her father had last seen Contreras alive the night before. When he went to wake her up the next morning, he found her dead. Contreras was pronounced dead at 11:38 a.m. on April 13.

When investigators searched Contreras’s bedroom, they found a pill bottle with “several assorted pills,” including two blue pills with the letter “M” on one side, according to an arrest warrant affidavit from APD. Court records said the pills were “counterfeit pills containing fentanyl.”  This is being investigated as Austin’s 38th homicide of 2024.  Contreras allegedly met with Buentello for “multiple narcotics transactions,” during the months of March and April, according to the affidavit.
