History of the Coalition:

YSAPC formally started on August 21, 2013 to address the identified community need to raise awareness of youth substance abuse issues in the Austin area. Community advocates had noted an increased use of substances among youth and a decreased perception of harm from substance use.

Accomplishments:

  • YSAPC has held three Prevention Summits: the first summit in October 2013 to raise awareness of youth substance use trends and the effects of substance use on youth brain development, a second summit in November 2015 to increase attendees’ knowledge of existing systems and resources supporting prevention and identify gaps in systems and resources in Travis County that included a youth panel and youth PSA showcase, and a third summit in June 2019 that addressed how to become more youth-centered to prevent youth substance misuse by examining state and local policies and practices as well as school efforts – it included a motivational interviewing training and a youth panel.
  • YSAPC members have presented at Austin and Manor ISD Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) meetings, at the University of Texas Center for Sports Leadership & Innovation, at an Austin Community Advancement Network (CAN) Board meeting, at the 2019 Partners in Prevention Conference, and have appeared on Travis County Access and local television.
  • YSAPC has recruited membership from 12 community sectors and YSAPC members have been trained in the SAMSHA Strategic Prevention Framework.
  • YSAPC has been awarded a Preventing Opioid Misuse Among Girls Ages 10-17 grant from the Office of Women’s Health Prevention.
  • YSAPC hosted a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Communities Talk Town Hall on Underage Drinking and Vaping Prevention in October 2019.
